The Biden Administration recently announced that they will be closing two migrant detention facilities, the C. Carlos Carreiro Immigration Detention Center in Bristol County, Mass. and the Irwin County Detention Center in Ocilla, Ga, amid allegations of misconduct and abuse at the sites.
The Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas wrote a memo to Acting Immigration and Customs Enforcement Director Tae Johnson that the “one foundational principle” of the department is that they will not tolerate the mistreatment of individuals in civil immigration detention or substandard conditions of detention. He said the department would “preserve evidence” for ongoing investigations and the transfer of detained migrants.
“We have an obligation to make lasting improvements to our civil immigration detention system. This marks an important first step to realizing that goal. DHS detention facilities and the treatment of individuals in those facilities will be held to our health and safety standards. Where we discover they fall short, we will continue to take action as we are doing today,” Mayorkas said.
Last year, a whistleblower at the Irwin facility claimed that unwanted hysterectomies were carried out on female migrants and that the facility was operating in unsanitary conditions. While the accused doctor has denied the allegations, a DHS official disclosed that the two facilities are mainly being closed because they are “no longer necessary.”

Meanwhile, a group of Tennessee Republicans has also sent a letter to Department of Health and Human Services secretary Xavier Becerra and DHS secretary Mayorkas over reports that migrant children are allegedly being transported to Chattanooga. Sens. Marsha Blackburn and Bill Hagerty, along with Rep. Chuck Fleischmann, have called on the two government agencies to hold a briefing on the management of unaccompanied minors – specifically in Chattanooga and the state of Tennessee.
“There are media reports that, within the last week, at least four planes carrying UACs landed at Wilson Air Center in Chattanooga, Tennessee, before swiftly boarding the children onto buses and transporting them to multiple cities across the southeastern United States for apparent resettlement, with zero transparency regarding what was happening. For months, reports have detailed how thousands of children are being housed in neglectful conditions at mass shelters operated by HHS under a veil of secrecy,” the letter reads.
The GOP lawmakers add that they are deeply troubled by the lack of transparency and accountability regarding the Biden Administration and the conditions that HHS is subjecting these migrant children to.
In videos obtained by WRCBtv, planes are seen landing at Wilson Air Center in Chattanooga, with children exiting the plane around 1:30 a.m on Friday, May 14, as well as on Saturday night. They were reportedly seen getting into buses owned by the Georgia Company Coast-to-Coast Tours.
The Tennessee Republicans insisted on answers as to why the Biden Administration is flying migrant children to Tennessee under the cover of darkness. They write that this is being conducted in “total secrecy” and without the knowledge or consent of Tennesseans or their elected officials.
“We are demanding the administration be transparent with Tennesseans — how many children are they trafficking through our state and where are they taking them? Tennesseans are not okay with it, and this must be halted,” the letter continues.
Between shutting down abusive facilities without any explanation and flying migrant children around on planes at night, the Biden Administration has promised “total transparency” and has done everything but. The border crisis is an already bad problem that keeps getting worse – and the Biden Administration has no plan to remedy it.
