While you are probably not seeing as many stories about the destruction that is currently taking place in downtown Minneapolis, the same issues are still taking place. Conditions on the ground are still brutal for local businesses and residents who are not participating in the protests. The demonstrations and riots are not as sizable as they once were but they are still happening as we speak.
The “new normal” has arrived. Businesses are not going to be able to recover until they are given the help that they need. Unfortunately for them, the local authorities are not all that interested in offering it up. Residents have been comparing their city to a “war zone”. Does that provide the local law enforcement officials with the impetus that they need?
Near as we can tell, the answer to that question is a resounding no. The 3rd Precinct has become especially troublesome. Assaults and robberies are now commonplace for the people who live and work here. Pedego Electric Bikes ownership has even communicated their employees’ fears to the local Police Chief.

Their employees are no longer willing to come to work because they are afraid to be robbed or assaulted but that does not matter to this city. The answer that the shop owner received from the Police Chief is stunning. He was essentially told that he is on his own at the moment. This is not the only business owner who has been rebuffed by the police.
Craig Paulson is the bike shop owner and he painted an awful picture. “Couple robberies. Two, three robberies in the area, and some break-ins and a couple of crazy stunts,” he says of the recent crime wave. Inspector Sean McGinty’s response to Paulson has to be read to be believed. We are still flabbergasted.
“As far as a long-term plan I don’t have one. I have lost 30% of my street officers since the end of May. Budget cuts from COVID-19 and an additional 1.5 million from the council in August we have let go of 17 CSO’s and canceled a recruiting class of 29. A potential Cadet class slated for January of 2021 was also eliminated.
It takes about a year to get a police Officer onto the streets with hiring, backgrounds, and field training so reinforcements aren’t coming anytime soon. We are doing everything we can with what we have. I hate to see great businesses like yours and the rest of your corridor being victimized and feeling unsafe. Please let me know if you have any more questions,” read McGinty’s statement.
There’s no long term plan and reinforcements are not imminent. How are business owners supposed to feel when these are the messages that the police have to offer them? This sounds like something out of a war film, where citizens are told to give up and allow the opposing forces to continue advancing for their own safety.
If this does not sound like a smart plan, that is because it is not. There’s no scenario where cities should be shrugging their shoulders like this. We’ll see how much they like it when their citizens begin to flee in droves. Cities are going to start to lose all of their tax revenue because of their unwillingness to protect their own citizens.
The 3rd Precinct is now on the ropes. They are losing funding because of the pandemic and the budget will be slashed even further because of the nascent social justice movement. New recruits are not even being trained at the moment. To make matters worse, more and more officers are getting out while the getting is still good.
The precinct does not even have a police station anymore because it has been burned to the ground. There’s a metaphor in there somewhere if the leftists are smart enough to get it. The local police are now homeless for all intents and purposes. Citizens will be taking matters in their own hands and they are going to realize what they should have already known: they are safer with the cops around.
