Since the death of George Floyd in late May and the subsequent calls for defunding the police, crime has escalated in most of America’s larger cities. Chicago is no exception. The only exception is that the city is currently one of the most violent places to be right now.
According to a June report by WMAQ-TV, shootings in the city are up by 75 percent. Murders have increased by 78 percent. And theft and other violent crimes are up as well, with many victims even being children.
Naturally, the city is screaming for help and protection.
Well, all except the mayor. Instead of working to stop the violence and hate that has taken her city by storm, she seems perfectly content with letting the entire metropolis burn.

But President Donald Trump is determined not to let that happen.
On June 26, he wrote a letter to Mayor Lori Lightfoot and Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker, both of whom are Democrats, asking that they fight to instill at least some semblance of law and order back into their streets, for the sake of their citizens if nothing else. He even offered to help them rebuild and make a new and better city, but they would first have to put forth some effort.
He wrote, “Your lack of leadership on this important issue continues to fail the people you have sworn to protect. … If you are willing to put partisanship aside, we can revitalize distressed neighborhoods in Chicago together. But to succeed, you must establish law and order.”
However, it seems Lightfoot didn’t even read the letter, let alone take it’s words to heart because the city is still fighting to tread above the violence that is drowning it.
Trump noted this on Monday during a news conference saying, “How about Chicago? Would you say they need help after this weekend? Do you know the numbers? Did you hear the numbers? Many, many shot. Many, many killed. I’m not talking about one, two. Was it 18 people killed? I think more than that. And you add it up over the summer – this is worse than Afghanistan, by far. This is worse than anything anyone has ever seen.”
The people of Chicago certainly think so. The president of the Fraternal Order of Police’s Lodge 7 in Chicago wrote to Trump on Saturday, begging for his assistance and claiming that Lightfoot has been a “complete failure” in protecting her city.
But Lightfoot is about to be blamed for her lack of leadership.
Instead, she is sticking to the age-old Democratic stand by that says guns are the real problem. You know, because Chicago and the entire state of Illinois have some of the strictest gun laws in the nation already.
She recently said that if Trump really wanted to help Chicago, he would implement more gun control policies such as universal background checks, and “assault weapons ban,” and making sure “that people who are banned from getting on airplanes can’t get guns.”
Additionally, Lightfoot blames her neighbor to the east, the Republican-led state of Indiana. According to her, Indiana has “very lax gun laws where somebody can drive across the border and literally load up a vehicle with military-grade weapons and bring them back to the city.” She says this is why Chicago has “too many illegal guns on our street” and why her city is burning from the inside out.
And this isn’t the first time she has blamed Indiana for her city’s problems. Back in September, she said that some “60% of illegal firearms recovered in Chicago come from outside IL – mostly from states dominated by coward Republicans like you who refuse to enact commonsense gun legislation.”
She was responding to Senator Ted Cruz on Twitter who had pointed out that despite Chicago’s harsh gun laws, violence and mayhem were all too common on Chicago’s streets. As it stands now, Chicago already as an “assault weapons” ban and background checks for just about everything. And yet, as both her response and Cruz’s statement note, it’s the illegal guns that are the problem.
Meaning, her accusation about “lax gun laws” has nothing to do with why her city is like it is. It’s far more likely that it has to do with her leadership abilities, as Trump suggests, such as her recent decision to release hundreds of inmates from her jails and then hide their identities from the police so they couldn’t be re-arrested.
And she wonders why crime is thriving on her streets. What an idiot.
